Walker Elliott has partnered with our client in the fertilizers industry to located a Process Engineer for its North Carolina production plant.   

What you will do:

  • Responsible for optimizing calciner production though process control and efficient operation of the associated equipment in the Mill Area
  • While making sure that neither safety nor the environment is compromised, the incumbent ensures that the products manufactured in the Mill area are within required chemical specifications for in-plant consumption and are produced at the lowest possible cost
  • Maintenance problems, which inhibit the efficient operation of the Mill Calciner equipment, are addressed either through modifications and the work order system, or by requesting capital funds for improvements
  • Employee training must be conducted to communicate changes in operating parameters as well as dealing with newly installed equipment
  • Responsible for optimizing the process control of the calciners, dryer, coal system, and associated operating equipment in the Mill Area
  • While making sure that neither safety nor the environment is compromised, the incumbent ensures that the products manufactured in the Mill calciner Area are within required chemical specifications for in-plant consumption and are produced at the lowest possible cost
  • Maintenance problems, which inhibit the efficient operation of the Mill Calcining & Drying equipment, are addressed either through modifications and the work order system, or by requesting capital funds for improvements
  • Responsible for training that must be conducted to communicate changes in operating parameters as well as dealing with newly installed equipment
  • Ensuring production tonnage meets or exceeds plan
  • Maintaining the required quality specifications of both the dried rock and calcined rock
  • Keeping costs low by improving the reliability of the operating equipment and optimizing the process
  • Ensuring that all testing and monitoring for environmental compliance are completed according to schedule
  • Monitoring and documenting all calcining and drying emissions data and as required in accordance with Title V and any other involved regulatory agency
  • Ensuring that the appropriate actions are taken to prevent or address environmental non-compliance
  • Requesting and applying capital funds to improve the calcining and drying operations
  • Maintaining fuel consumption at efficient levels
  • Participating in crew meetings on a monthly basis to improve safety and environmental awareness
  • Troubleshooting operational delays reduce bottlenecks, and identify mechanical problems
  • Responsible for proper operation of all six WESPs
  • Coordinating daily production and process trials with other departments
  • Tracking performance and initiate process modifications, as necessary 
  • Back-up some of the functions of the concentrate process engineer
  • Conduct presentations and meetings with the plant and outside agendas

What you will bring:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering is required
  • A degree in Mining, Metallurgical Engineering or Mineral Processing is preferred, other engineering disciplines may be acceptable
  • 5+ years of industrial experience in the mining industry is required
  • A strong background within product conveying, mineral processing, chemical engineering, chemistry, materials handling, and familiarity with regulatory requirements with respect to emission monitoring and control is highly beneficial
  • Prior practical experience within the cement, lime, mining or mineral processing industries, is desirable
  • Expertise with personal computers and various software applications is essential in order to keep up with key operating guidelines for product quality, budget calculations, environmental calculations, and miscellaneous statistical manipulations
  • Supervisory skills are required because the incumbent fills in for the Superintendent and General Supervisor, has weekend duty on a regular basis, and must direct Calcining & Drying personnel to make changes in operating procedures
  • Project engineering development and management skills will be necessary
  • Effective speaking is very helpful because there are numerous occasions when crew meetings need to be conducted
  • Six sigma training is desired
